Hearing Assistive Technology in the Classroom

personal sound amplification device for college student

Personal sound amplification devices help students succeed. Between 20 and 25 percent of students are affected by a hearing loss that can hinder their academic success. Assistive listening systems are an inclusive solution for classrooms from kindergarten to college and have significant benefits for students and teachers:

  • Increased student focus, comprehension, and retention.
  • Greater student engagement in class activities.
  • Better grades on assessments.
  • Improved classroom management for teachers.

How to Use Two-Way Communication in the Classroom

Personal sound amplification devices allow teachers to clearly communicate class content and instructions without needing to raise their voice or repeat themselves. Students can easily hear the lesson and are equipped to learn and participate. These systems are the ideal solution for classroom environments and activities such as:

  • Circle time or story time for younger students
  • Shop classes (wood shop, auto shop, etc.)
  • Large college lecture halls
  • School assemblies
  • Outdoor activities
  • Trade schools

The wireless communication system allows teachers and students to freely move about the classroom and use their hands. A transceiver is worn on a lanyard around the instructor’s neck accompanied by a headset system with a microphone for hands-free communication. Students needing auditory assistance wear a transceiver on a lanyard as well as an earphone for enhanced hearing. The transceiver sends signals from the teacher’s system directly to the student’s earphone and cannot be hear by other students.

Assistive hearing systems can be used for multiple teachers and/or multiple students. Choose a set up for two-way communication so the student can hear the teacher and directly respond or collaborate with other students, or one-way communication so the teacher can clearly transmit to students without interruptions.
